Project: Project Completion Review of the Sustainable Mining Action Plan Programme, DFID China
Client: DFID China
Partner Consultancy: IMC Worldwide
Dates: 11/2018 - 12/2018

UrbanEmerge worked with IMC Worldwide to deliver a clear and concise lesson learning review on the completion of this programme. DFID’s objective was to support the work being done by GIZ and the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Metals Minerals & Chemicals Importers & Exporters (CCCMC) to encourage Chinese mining companies working outside of China to implement sustainable mining guidelines and wider Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Many of these companies are working in Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) countries.
This is an area of huge potential impact, with some of the benefits observed in the review being an improvement by some companies in environmental measures close to mining and processing sites, dialogue and cooperation with local communities and the undermining of shocking conditions such as child labour in a conflict environment, as Chinese mining companies ensure their supply chains are more transparent. The review team interviewed stakeholders in Beijing and carried out phone interviews with some Chinese mining companies operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Lessons were disseminated to DFID, GIZ, CCMC and wider development partners interested in this area of intervention.
